Physical Safeguarding Measures in Schools

Secure Perimeter Fencing and Gates

  • Purpose: To clearly define school boundaries and prevent unauthorised access.

  • Explanation: High, durable fencing and lockable gates limit entry to the premises, keeping students safe during school hours. Gates can be locked automatically or controlled remotely during certain times (e.g., after registration).

Controlled Access Points

  • Purpose: To manage who enters and exits the school.

  • Explanation: Having a single main entrance for visitors ensures all individuals can be checked before entry. Side and back entrances remain locked or for emergency use only.

CCTV Surveillance

  • Purpose: To deter and monitor suspicious or unsafe activity.

  • Explanation: Strategically placed cameras (e.g., at entrances, corridors, and playgrounds) help monitor behaviour, prevent bullying, and provide evidence if incidents occur. Footage must comply with data protection laws (e.g., GDPR).

Controlled Access to Buildings/Classrooms

  • Purpose: To restrict movement to authorised personnel only.

  • Explanation: Staff access cards or keypads can secure sensitive areas (e.g., staff rooms, IT suites, or safeguarding records). This helps prevent children or visitors from entering unsafe zones.

Emergency Exits and Alarms

  • Purpose: To ensure safe evacuation in emergencies.

  • Explanation: Clearly marked fire exits, alarm systems, and regular drills help staff and pupils know how to respond quickly and safely in emergencies.
